Why a change of rail gauge still decides what moves east
An 85mm difference in track width, set in the 1840s, still shapes how freight reaches Ukraine and Central Asia.

The Russian Empire built its railways to 1,520mm. Most of Europe settled on 1,435mm. The difference is 85 millimetres, and nearly two centuries later it remains one of the more consequential facts about moving anything overland between Europe and Asia.
What a break-of-gauge costs
Where the gauges meet — the Polish-Ukrainian border, Brest on the Belarusian frontier, the Finnish border — every wagon must have its bogies swapped or its cargo transhipped.
Bogie exchange takes hours for a full train. Transhipment takes longer and needs cranes, labour and yard space. Either way the border becomes a throughput limit no amount of demand can wish away.
Where it bites now
Grain leaving Ukraine by rail hits this at the Polish border, as does aid moving the other way. The constraint is not track but the number of transfer terminals and their working hours, and those cannot be expanded quickly.
China-Europe rail freight changes gauge twice — entering Kazakhstan, then leaving Belarus for Poland. Each transfer adds a day or two, which is why the route competes with sea freight on time rather than price.
The part that is not technical
Gauge differences were often deliberate: a different gauge means an invading army cannot run its own rolling stock down your network. Spain and Portugal built wide partly for the same reason.
That history is why standardisation projects are slower than they look on a map.
